Definition

A symmetrical open curve formed by the intersection of a cone and a plane parallel to its side; in mathematics, the graph of a quadratic equation. Parabolas appear frequently in physics, engineering, and nature.

From Greek parabole, meaning comparison or analogy, later adopted for this geometric curve by Apollonius.
