Definition

A genus of bioluminescent marine dinoflagellates that produce light through chemiluminescence, creating the glowing phenomenon known as bioluminescent tide or phosphorescence in seawater. These single-celled organisms are responsible for much of the visible "milky" glow in nighttime ocean waters.

Example Usage

The beach at night was transformed by noctiluca, with waves crashing in ethereal blue light.

Origin

From Latin nox (night) + lucere (to shine), literally 'night light' or 'shining at night.'

Fun Fact

Noctiluca can bloom into massive red tides visible from space, and while usually harmless, they deplete oxygen and can harm marine ecosystems.
