Definition
Orders that specify the objective and desired outcome but let subordinates figure out how to achieve it. It's the military equivalent of 'I don't care how you do it, just get it done.'
Example Usage
The general issued mission-type orders, allowing the battalion commander flexibility in tactical execution.
Origin
German military doctrine (Auftragstaktik), adopted by NATO
Fun Fact
Mission-type orders work well when leaders are competent but fail spectacularly when they're not.
