Definition
The act of silently reading, browsing, or observing online communities, forums, or social media without posting, commenting, or engaging publicly. Lurkers consume content but remain invisible to the community.
Example Usage
I've been lurking in that Discord server for months before finally posting an introduction.
Origin
From 'lurk,' originally used in early internet forums and message boards to describe invisible observers; predates social media.
Fun Fact
Studies suggest that in most online communities, lurkers vastly outnumber active participants—often cited as a 90-9-1 rule (90% lurk, 9% participate, 1% creates).
