Definition

The process of resolving disputes by spending more money on lawyers than the dispute was ever worth in the first place. The legal equivalent of burning down your house to kill a spider.

Example Usage

"After three years of litigation over a $500 fence dispute, we have each spent $40,000 in legal fees, but at least we have our principles and our debt."

The art of describing reality with such creative liberty that lawyers get involved. Whether you're a realtor calling a broom closet 'cozy' or an agent 'accidentally' omitting that flood history, it's when the gap between what you said and what's true becomes legally problematic. It's like lying, but with potential lawsuits and professional consequences attached.

When a higher court agrees with a lower court's decision, essentially saying "yeah, they got it right the first time" and dashing the hopes of whoever appealed. It's the judicial equivalent of your boss backing up your manager's decision after you complained to HR. Once upheld, the original ruling stands and everyone moves on (whether they like it or not).

A brave soul who reports illegal activity at their workplace and is rewarded with legal protection and social ostracism in roughly equal measure. The corporate equivalent of the kid who reminded the teacher about homework.

A process where two parties who hate each other agree to let a third party they have never met settle their dispute instead of going to court. It is basically Judge Judy without the television audience and snarky one-liners.

A court's reduction of an excessive jury award, essentially judicial editing when the jury got a little too generous with someone else's money. The plaintiff can accept it or demand a new trial.

The civilized alternative to settling disputes with pitchforks and torches, where disagreeing parties ask a judge (and possibly a jury) to decide who's right using an absurdly expensive process involving lawyers, paperwork, and years of your life. It's basically formalized arguing with filing fees. The grown-up version of 'I'm telling Mom' except Mom wears a robe and has a gavel.
