Definition
Muscle contraction without length change or joint movement, like holding a plank. It looks like nothing's happening, but your muscles disagree.
Example Usage
I held an isometric wall sit for 60 seconds and my quads filed a formal complaint.
Origin
From Greek 'iso' (equal) and 'metric' (measurement); biomechanics terminology.
Fun Fact
Isometric holds can increase strength at specific angles but don't build strength across the full range of motion.
