Definition

Latin for 'between the parties'—legal proceedings where both parties are present and heard. The opposite of ex parte, where one side doesn't show up or get to speak.

Example Usage

The hearing was conducted inter partes with both the plaintiff and defendant presenting their arguments.

Fun Fact

Inter partes proceedings are considered fairer than ex parte ones, which is why ex parte is reserved for emergency situations or when the other party can't be located.
