Definition
Abnormally decreased volume of circulating blood. When you don't have enough blood for your body to properly function—essentially running on fumes.
Example Usage
The trauma patient's hypovolemia from internal bleeding required massive transfusion to prevent hypovolemic shock.
Origin
From Greek 'hypo' (below) and Latin 'volumen' (volume)
Fun Fact
Losing just 15% of blood volume causes symptoms; lose 40% and you're likely dead. Our bodies run on surprisingly tight margins.
