In World of Warcraft lore, the High Elves are an ancient magical civilization who split from the Night Elves millennia ago, settled in Quel'Thalas, and got progressively destroyed by the Scourge—eventually transforming into Blood Elves and the Forsaken. It's basically 10,000 years of bad decisions culminating in demons and undeath.
