Definition
An animal that feeds exclusively or primarily on plants, grasses, and vegetation, as opposed to carnivores or omnivores. Herbivores have specialized digestive systems adapted to break down plant material.
Example Usage
Cows, sheep, and deer are all herbivores that graze on grass.
Origin
From Latin 'herba' (grass, herb) + '-vorus' (eating, feeding on), literally 'grass-eater.'
Fun Fact
Some herbivores, like cows, require multiple stomach chambers to ferment and digest tough plant fibers, while others like rabbits practice coprophagy (eating their own feces) to extract maximum nutrition.
