Definition

A secure area under friendly control, where the risk of attack is low enough that you might actually sleep through the night. Not to be confused with the heavily fortified government district in Baghdad, which took the name but added way more blast walls.

Example Usage

Contractors could move freely within the green zone without body armor or armed escorts.

Origin

Used generally in military operations but became famous as the specific name for the International Zone in Baghdad during the Iraq War

Fun Fact

The Baghdad Green Zone was surrounded by the 'Red Zone'โ€”the rest of the cityโ€”creating a literal color-coded safety map where green meant 'relatively safe' and red meant 'definitely not safe.'
