Definition

The art of making documents look pretty or preparing storage devices for their inevitable filling with cat photos. In tech, it's either arranging text and images into a pleasing layout, or the digital equivalent of wiping a hard drive clean before handing it to someone else—because you definitely don't want them finding your embarrassing file naming conventions.

Example Usage

Before submitting the report, spend three hours formatting it perfectly, then watch your boss convert it to plain text anyway.

A line drawn on a map connecting points that experienced equal earthquake intensity, essentially creating a geological mood ring of seismic suffering. Geologists use these concentric circles to visualize how an earthquake's shake-factor diminished across distance. Not to be confused with "isoseismic," because seismology apparently needed multiple confusing terms for the same concept.

The perpetual up-and-down or side-to-side motion you make to view content that doesn't fit on one screen, which is basically everything in the modern digital age. Before touch screens made it intuitive, we had scroll bars and mouse wheels; now we just swipe endlessly through social media feeds until we forget what we were looking for. In chat rooms, it also refers to the annoying practice of flooding conversations with text to push other messages out of view.

The structured arrangement of elements within a design, document, or physical space—basically how you organize stuff so it doesn't look like a toddler's collage. In design and tech, it's the blueprint that determines where everything goes before the client inevitably asks you to move it all around. A good layout is invisible; a bad one makes people's eyes bleed.
