Definition
A proposed change to legislation introduced during debate on the floor rather than in committee, often deployed as a surprise attack or last-ditch effort. It's democracy's version of editing a document while everyone's watching.
Example Usage
Senator Martinez introduced a floor amendment at midnight that would have renamed the highway after his favorite taco stand.
Origin
From parliamentary procedure traditions in the British House of Commons
Fun Fact
Some floor amendments are introduced solely to force opponents into awkward votes that look bad in campaign ads, a tactic called a 'gotcha amendment.'
