extravasation

Intermediate 🏥 Healthcare / Medical

Definition

The accidental leakage of IV fluids or medications into surrounding tissue instead of the vein, turning a therapeutic intervention into a localized chemical disaster. It's what happens when your intravenous becomes extra-venous.

Example Usage

The chemotherapy extravasation caused severe tissue damage and required immediate intervention.

Origin

From Latin 'extra' (outside) + 'vas' (vessel)

Fun Fact

Some chemotherapy agents are so caustic that extravasation can cause tissue necrosis requiring surgical debridement or even amputation in severe cases.
