Definition
Abnormal cell growth that's not cancer (yet) but looks suspicious enough to make pathologists concerned—basically cancer's suspicious cousin.
Example Usage
The cervical biopsy showed cervical dysplasia, requiring closer monitoring and possible colposcopy.
Origin
From Greek 'dys' (bad) + 'plasia' (growth); medical term since the early 1900s.
Fun Fact
Dysplasia is graded as mild, moderate, or severe—severe dysplasia is considered a precancerous lesion and often requires intervention.
