Definition

Interest earning interest on itself, which Einstein allegedly called the eighth wonder of the world, though he probably never had a credit card balance. It's magical when it works for you and absolutely devastating when it works against you.

Example Usage

"Compound interest turned my $100 investment into $110 over ten years. Meanwhile, compound interest turned my student loan into a mortgage."

An accounting entry recognizing that an asset is now worth less than its book value, forcing companies to admit their expensive acquisition was actually terrible. It's the corporate version of finding out your vintage comic book collection is worthless.

Money that someone owes you but hasn't paid yet, living in that optimistic space between "they said they'd pay" and "we're calling the lawyers." It's an asset on paper because theoretically you'll collect it, but in practice it's IOU notes from varying degrees of reliable sources. Also known as "accounts receivable" when accountants want to sound official.
