A social media feature (notably on Instagram and Snapchat) that allows users to share content with a restricted subset of followers, typically their most trusted or intimate contacts. It creates a private sharing tier between public posts and direct messages.

Origin
Emerged with Instagram's 'Close Friends' feature launched in 2018 as a response to users wanting selective sharing.
